others. he's still at large and police say he has access to multiple weapons and assault rifles. cnn's kyung lah is joining us from los angeles where the police chief is calling it extremely worry some and scare ree. what's the latest kyung? >> reporter: certainly scary for anyone connected to the police department in southern california. this is where today's shooting spree began but all of this, wolf, began earlier this week. the murder spree began on sunday with the double killing of a newly engaged couple, monica quan and keith lawrence, quan, the daughter of a retired lapd captain, the officer who represented christopher dorner in front of the police board that eventually fired him. dorner refers to quan's murder in his man guess stow. he writes, i never had the opportunity to have a family of my own. i'm terminating yours. self-preservation is no longer important to me. i do not fear death as i died long ago on january 2nd of '09, a date a few month after dorner was fired as a police officer. the lapd fanned out, launching 40 protection details throughout southern california. >

. >> this is cnn breaking news. we begin in california with miguel marquez. he's in big bear, california. he's been tracking the story all day and he has the latest. miguel, what do we know? >> well, we know there is a body in a cabin just up the road from where we are. and we believe it is the body of christopher dorner. we have confirmed it through several federal law enforcement and through someone who apparently leaked it from los angeles police department that dorner is in that cabin and now it is a matter of collecting his body and 100% identifying it. san bernardino sheriffs office push back as has lapd saying they haven't gotten in there and are not sure it is him but they said throughout the day mr. dorner was spotted several times, was in the cabin and never left that cabin. i have from another law enforcement official, federal official that his cell phone, mr. dorner's cell phone went on throughout the day and it is possible they were able to talk to him during the day and confirm he was in there and more importantly he did not have hostages in that cabin. at one.he tried to get out of i
in chicago just days after performing for the obama inauguration. cnn's thooena jones is on the south side of check at the funeral. athena, you've had a chance to talk with some family and friends. what are they saying? >> well, you know, we've been viewing the ceremony from our truck out here. we have a live feed in. this has been a very emotional day certainly for hadiyah pendleton's friends and family and particularlial last half hour or so. we've seen more than a dozen young people, many of them young women who described themselves as best friends of hadial pendleton and a few young men talk about what she was like, a common theme is she smiled a lot. that she was a mentor and filled with laughter. let's listen to what one of these young people had to say. >> like the vibrant color purple, she chose spirituality and imagination. hadyia, you're beautiful like diamonds in the sky. and you've already begun to shine. >> and you heard her refer to the color purple. that is said to be hadiyah's favorite colors. and as you also heard from that young lady, quite emotional. some people said one
